Joe Kovacs, APR is an accounting services marketing consultant with more than 15 years of in-house experience as the director of marketing and business development at two mid-sized firms in the Washington, DC region. From this background, he has learned more than just the strategic and technical intricacies of professional services marketing. He also understands the culture and inner dynamics of professional services firms. He knows how to get things done on the way to finding more clients and growing a successful business.
Joe thrives at collaborating with executives, practice-level leaders, marketers, business developers, growth professionals and consultants. His wide-ranging areas of interest include strategic communications, writing and project management. He is also a recognized industry speaker, having presented for groups such as the AICPA, CPAmerica International, the Association for Accounting Marketing (AAM), the Greater Washington Society of CPAs and the Massachusetts Society of CPAs.
He was recruited to the accounting industry in the early 2000s from the nonprofit sector, where he delivered impact-driven communications for several years after serving as a Peace Corps volunteer in Sri Lanka.
Shortly after joining his first CPA firm (a mid-sized firm with 60 professionals and support personnel), Joe realized it was an excellent professional fit. He enjoyed direct participation in everything from website management to proposal development, from email marketing to social media, from campaign tracking to media relations, and from networking to events management.
In the middle of his tenure as an accounting firm marketer, he took a three-year geographic and professional "break" to manage public relations for an engineering consulting firm and a school district in Colorado, a time period which contributed to his Accreditation in Public Relations (APR) from the Public Relations Society of America.
Of his time living in Denver he says: "You couldn't drive five minutes outside of town in any direction without finding a trailhead that led to someplace stunning."
After returning to the Washington, DC metro region and to his career as an accounting services marketer, he quickly became involved in AAM, a group for which he has now volunteered for more than 10 years. AAM is the national membership association dedicated to professional development and networking for marketers and growth professionals in the accounting industry.

* Joe was the founding member of the Strategic Communications Committee shortly following the launch of Vision 2020, AAM's first five-year strategic plan.

Joe is a Bronx-born New Yorker and current resident of Bethesda, MD whose interests include parenting his teenage son, golfing, traveling, reading, writing and rooting for Aaron Judge and the New York Yankees, and the Pittsburgh Steelers.
He is also active at his church where he has taught Sunday school and, unforgettably, once helped direct the second grade Christmas pageant.
